Lootbound Companions Guide: AI Party Members
How Lootbound companions work: you control only the hero, they act on their own, and each needs a separate inventory.
Lootbound is a party game with a solo controller. Companions are AI-controlled allies you recruit during a run. They need their own gear, and they take their own turns.
Who controls companions in combat?
You do not. Companions act on their own. Launch coverage describes a basic attack plus a conditional special ability, without direct input. That removes per-companion targeting and positioning from the player.
| Actor | Who clicks | What they do |
|---|---|---|
| Main hero | You | The only character you drive |
| Companion | AI | Attacks and conditional specials |
Launch coverage’s FAQ cites two AI companions joining a run.
If a companion fires a special at the wrong time, that is an AI decision, not a missed hotkey.
How do I recruit companions?
You start alone and meet companions along the route. Every run can hand you a different roster.
| Question | Sourced answer |
|---|---|
| Start size | One hero |
| When they join | Along the map |
| How many | Launch FAQ: two AI companions |
| Unlock rules | Four playable archetypes exist |
Do companions need their own gear?
Yes. You collect a separate equipment set for the hero and for each companion. Each grid is its own aura puzzle. A strong sword on the hero does nothing for a companion who still has an empty core.
| Rule | What you do |
|---|---|
| Separate sets | Build a spine on every recruited grid |
| Auras are local | An aura on the hero does not buff a companion’s cells |
| Space is per character | Do not hoard “for later” on a full companion grid |
What classes can join a run?
Launch coverage says four playable character archetypes with distinct gear types. A beginner tips article names Warrior, Paladin, Witch, and Jester. Treat those names as reported archetypes until the in-game roster is logged here.
| Reported archetype | Reported lean |
|---|---|
| Warrior | Slash, critical chance, vampirism |
| Paladin | Armor, health, resistance, Order |
| Witch | Acid, Chaos, mana, debuffs |
| Jester | Party buffs and instruments |
Order is reported to amplify beneficial effects such as healing and armor repair. Chaos is reported to amplify negative effects on enemies. Tips coverage says to pick one lean per character rather than mixing both.
Opening lanes that pair with these archetypes are in opening builds.
